Lidl, a privately held German grocer, began its entry into the US market in the summer of 2017 with its first wave of stores opening in Virginia and the Carolinas and aggressive plans to expand in the Northeast as well as Texas and other states in the years to come.
The Lidl Grocery Store on Providence Road in Virginia Beach was one of the first to open in the Hampton Roads area. The unique design of this facility includes a curved roof with a large curtain wall that allows natural sunlight to illuminate the sales area. The store also features a bakery that sells fresh baked bread and pastries.
Lidl expects to open 100 stores in 2017 and has plans for at least a dozen other locations across Hampton Roads. The Armada Hoffler Construction Company is currently building or has already built three of them.
